The last maps of the empire were drawn in blood.

Elowen Ashvale knew this because her grandmother had told her so — whispered it like a secret over candlelight, fingers tracing the faded ink of territories long since swallowed by the Dusk. The old woman's hands had trembled then, not from age but from something older, something that lived in the marrow of those who remembered when the cartographer's guild still stood.

That guild had been ash for forty years. The empire's cartographers had been the first to go, their maps confiscated, their libraries burned, their knowledge branded as witchcraft by an emperor who feared what they might draw into existence. But maps, like memories, have a way of surviving.

The one Elowen found tucked inside her grandmother's tea chest was no larger than a folded letter — parchment so old it felt like dry skin, covered in notations in a language she half-recognized from dreams she'd never been able to explain.
